Urgent Notice - Outside Stairwell Reform Notice

Due to the scheduled reform of the outside stairwell, the following schedule has been set. If there is any need to contact us directly with a matter directly related to this reform, please contact us at the information provided below.

Schedule

Begin Reform: April 3rd, 2010 (Saturday)

Complete Reform: April 22nd, 2010 (Thursday)

Operation Times: 8:30am - 5:30pm

Reform Area: Outside stairwell

Reform Details: Replacement of handrails, piping, and overhead roof.
Replacement of the middle and first floor panels.

Requests:
- Please understand that noise may occur from this reforming project.
- All disturbances which may occur during this project will be kept to a minimum, and the safety of all is the highest priority.
- Please use the elevator at all possible times to avoid the construction.

LCJ received the following information from United Nations regarding a briefing by Mr. Movses Abelian. It is good idea to attend this event if you are interested in UN or the topic he will release.

Briefing: Administrative and financial operations of the United Nations — Status quo and the challenges it faces –
Press Release 10-008-E@10/02/2010Mr. Movses Abelian, Secretary of the Administrative and Budgetary Committee of the General Assembly (Fifth Committee) and the Committee on Programme Coordination (CPC), will visit Japan upon invitation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Taking this opportunity, Mr. Abelian will brief on the administrative and financial operations of the United Nations — the status quo and the challenges it faces –, with focus on the process of planning and decision-making of the UN budget as well as the scale of assessments of Member States. Mr. Masahiko Kiya, Director, UN Planning and Administration Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be present at the briefing as a commentator.

Biographical Note: Mr. Movses Abelian assumed the office of Secretary of the Administrative and Budgetary Committee of the General Assembly (Fifth Committee) and the Committee on Programme and Coordination (CPC) in 2003. Prior to his appointment in 2003, Mr. Abelian was the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the United Nations with the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, a post he held since 1997. During his career representing Armenia in the international community, Mr. Abelian took several posts including the Chairman of the Fifth Committee (1998) and President of the United Nations Childrenfs Fund (UNICEF).

Scholarship information from FCCJ

Scholarship Money Available - up to 300,000JPY

The Foreign Correspondents Club in Tokyo is offering a number of scholarships to students

First prize: 300,000JPY
Second prize: 200,000JPY
Third prize: 100,000JPY
Special Mention prizes: Varying amounts

An LCJ student won 200,000JPY three years ago

Deadline for application: February 15

Requirements: submit an application (can also be found on the FCCJ website), resume, copy of one’s student identification card, a brief statement on how you would use the money and ONE of the following

Original journalistic article of 800 to 1200 words
Or
Photo entry: A selection of TEN 8×10 photos with a 200-word introduction about what the photos are meant to convey
Or
Video entry 1.5 - 3 minute television story package on one of the topics. Should be primarily the sole work of the contributor although outside sources can be cited as giving assistance.

Topics: (1) New media versus Old Media
(2) What Japanese Youth thin about the future of News in Newspapers, TV and the Internet.
