Dear LCJ Graduate

Filed under: Alumni — Yasutaka @ 4:45 am

Dear LCJ Graduate,

Hello. I wonder how you are doing now that you are not taking classes at LCJ anymore. Enjoying your life away from the classroom?

I have a challenge for you if have some free time between now and the end of September. In May, I visited Yakushima. As you know, it is a World Heritage Site and full of rich nature.

I traveled around the island, including the western coast. The beaches on the western coast are not very long, but they are very important for the nesting of loggerhead turtles. Forty percent of all loggerhead turtles eggs that are laid in Japan are laid on these beaches between May and July. Then, in the late summer, the eggs hatch and the baby turtles find their way to the sea.

I stopped in to a place called Umigame-kan. It is a research/conservation NPO and a museum. As I talked to the chairman, Kazuyoshi Omuta, I soon realized that it is a sincere organization doing an important task with limited money and limited staff.

Right now is the busiest time for the Umigamekan and they really need volunteers. I am sending you this letter to see if you might be interested and able to go there and serve as a volunteer for limited time period. I am enclosing some details that will help you make a decision. You will not get rich, you will have to work a strange time schedule, but I think it may be a very important experience for you. And, before or after the volunteer work, you can take time to see some of the incredible features of this special island.

If you are interested, you can contact Mr Omuta directly. However, I would like to know if any of you decide to go, so please send me an email <lionberger@japan.lakeland.edu>. Also, I took photos of the area, including the beaches, the museum and some of the lodging. If you’d like to see the photos, I’d be happy to send them to you via email.

This letter is going out to all the people listed below because I think they may be available or particularly interested. If you know anyone else who may be interested, please pass on the information!

Sincerely,

Ruth Lionberger
